Navy’s contribution to vocational training recognized

A ceremony marking the award of one million National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) certificates in Sri Lanka recognised the Sri Lanka Navy's contribution to the development of vocational education and training in the country.

The event, organised by Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, was graced by Hon. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, as the Chief Guest. The event, titled ‘Celebrating the Milestone of Awarding of One Million NVQ Certificates’ was held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on 12 August 2026.

The Navy has implemented training and assessment programmes under the NVQ framework to develop the professional and technical know-how and skills of its officers and sailors, while providing national-level recognition for their vocational competencies.

The NVQ system has also been used to standardise training programmes in various professional and technical fields within the Navy and to enhance the vocational competencies of naval personnel. This has contributed to developing a more skilled, professional and technically capable workforce within the service.

At the event, an award of appreciation was presented to the Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Commodore Dinesh Bandara, recognising the contribution of NMA to the successful implementation of the NVQ system and the advancement of vocational education and training.
