Navy finds 188 banned fishing nets in Batticaloa lagoon area

A group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a routine patrol, managed to find 188 banned fishing nets used for illegal fishing practices in the lagoon area of Batticaloa last morning (02nd March). During the arrest nine (09) 150-foot-long fishing nets and hundred and seventy nine (179) 150-foot-long fishing nets were found. They were subsequently handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Batticaloa for onward action.

Since the use of illegal fishing gear for fishing activities leads to the fast depletion of the fish stock in Sri Lankan waters, the Navy is ever alert in preventing such harmful activities practiced by people paying scant regard for its repercussions.
