New batch of SBS receives coveted insignia from Commander of the Navy

In a ceremony marked by pride and tradition, the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, at the invitation of Commanding Officer SBS, Commander Lakmal Weerakkodi, graced the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) insignia awarding and passing out ceremony held at SBS Headquarters, Trincomalee on 22 Mar 25. The dignified event which saw 02 officers and 34 sailors successfully completing their course (No 32), was a testament to the arduous SBS training and dedication of the naval personnel. The event was also dignified by the presence of the President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Anusha Banagoda.

The awarding of insignias was a significant milestone for the personnel who successfully completed the 32nd batch of SBS training, symbolizing their readiness, skill, and commitment to the highest standards. After the pinning of coveted SBS insignia, those who remained outstanding during the training period, received awards from the Commander of the Navy.

Accordingly, Sub Lieutenant RMYK Rathnayake won the Commander SNK Silva Memorial Trophy, awarded for the member who accumulated the Highest Aggregate in Overall Subjects. Ordinary Seaman KMSR Premalal won the Commander CD Martenstyn Memorial Trophy, awarded for the Best Marksman. Meanwhile, Ordinary Seaman JWGMPK Kumara won the Lieutenant Commander SK Dalugama Memorial Trophy, awarded for the SBS Member who possessed the Highest Physical Endurance. Further, the Chief Petty Officer KG Shantha Memorial Trophy, awarded for the Best Sportsman, was won by Ordinary Seaman KGH Ransith. The Lieutenant Commander TD Palihena Memorial Trophy, awarded for the Best Swimmer, was presented to Ordinary Seaman KWDK Herath, while Lieutenant WM Dilshan won the Lieutenant Commander SW Gallage Memorial SBS Dagger, awarded for the Most Excellent SBS Member.

In his address, the Navy Chief extended his heartfelt congratulations to the new batch of SBS personnel. He reflected on the remarkable journey of the SBS, tracing its evolution from humble beginnings to its current stature as a highly skilled and respected unit. Acknowledging the invaluable contributions of past officers and sailors, he emphasized how their dedication and sacrifices paved the way for the SBS's success. With deep reverence, he also honoured the memory of all fallen SBS naval personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Vice Admiral Banagoda also stated that the country is on the right course after a challenging time. Thus, he underscored that armed forces have a special responsibility to support nation-building efforts and urged naval personnel, as dedicated citizens, to fulfill their duties and social responsibilities with maximum effort.

Addressing the new batch, he urged them to continuously hone their skills, maintain unwavering discipline, and devotedly perform their entrusted duties. Vice Admiral Banagoda also expressed his gratitude to the parents of the newly passed out personnel for their unwavering support and encouragement. Finally, he commended the Commanding Officer and Training Instructors for their relentless efforts in shaping the new generation of SBS members, ensuring the legacy of excellence continues.

The esteemed guests were treated to an impressive display of combat expertise by SBS personnel, along with a special exhibition showcasing sea, air, and land demonstrations, held at the SBS Headquarters and Nicholson Cove Sea area. The event highlighted the skills of SBS snipers, combat divers, VBSS teams, specially trained canines, martial arts units, and maritime and urban combat teams, as well as parachute teams under the leadership of Commander Kamal Tissa Kumara. The demonstrations captivated the audience, drawing widespread admiration.

The Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe, his spouse, officers from the Navy Headquarters and Eastern Naval Command, senior officers from Sister-Services, distinguished invitees and parents of the new batch of SBS personnel were also present on this occasion.
