Navy continues to deliver hope and relief to affected communities

As part of its post-disaster management programmes, the Sri Lanka Navy is sustaining wide-ranging operations to restore normalcy for citizens affected by recent adverse weather conditions.

These dedicated efforts focus on safe transportation, cleaning public places and drinking water wells, repairing roads and railways, providing diving assistance for the repair of bridges, water treatment plants and sluices, and distributing relief supplies to disaster-affected people.

To date, naval craft have safely transported 15,555 affected individuals across flood-impacted regions. In parallel, community restoration work has seen the cleaning of approximately 700 drinking water wells and over 200 schools, houses and public places, all of which have been handed back for public use.

On 12 December, naval personnel provided essential support to restore damaged railway infrastructure in Naththandiya and Chilaw, and conducted diving operations to assist with repairs on the Sarasavi Uyana Railway Bridge in Peradeniya, as well as the Bokkawala and Kalugamuwa bridges. Additionally, the Navy divers performed underwater maintenance at the water treatment plant in Matale.

In response to disrupted road connectivity, specifically due to damaged bridges across the Nayaru Lagoon in Mullaitivu and flooding from the Ma Oya in Padiviya, the Navy is currently providing safe transport for affected communities via naval craft.

The Navy also assisted the Thalathuoya Divisional Secretariat with distributing dry rations and preparing relief parcels for affected individuals. Additionally, on 12 December, naval personnel supported the cleaning and repair of damaged roads in the Bawlana, Madawala, and Gampola areas of Kandy
