Navy holds five persons engaged in illegal fishing

Five (05) persons who engaged in illegal fishing were apprehended by Navy during a patrol carried out in the seas south of Kakathivu island, on 05th July 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy constantly conducts patrols to curb the illegal means of fishing in order to preserve marine resources. As such extension, these suspects who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets and without permits were apprehended during a patrol conducted in the seas south of Kakathivu island by a team of naval personnel attached to North Central Naval Command. Five (05) suspects, 24 banned nets, a traditional fishing craft(Wallam) with OBM, other fishing gear used by them and 70kg of fish were taken into custody.

The suspects are residents of Manipay area. Apprehended persons along with the unauthorized nets, traditional fishing craft with OBM, illegally caught fish and other fishing gear were handed over to the Jayapuram Police for further investigation.
