Navy nabs suspect with Crystal Methamphetamine in Talaimannar

The Navy apprehended a suspect in possession of about 485g of Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE), during a special operation carried out in the beach area of Urumalai, Talaimannar this evening (19th January 2022).

Being a vigilant force prepared to thwart illegal activities including the smuggling of drugs stemming via sea routes, the Navy has been conducting anti-drug operations regularly. As an extension of these operations, SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command searched a suspicious dinghy that arrived at Urumalai Beach this evening. The search led to the recovery of about 485g of Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE), concealed in a plastic container in the dinghy. Along with the narcotic substance a suspect and the dinghy were also taken into naval custody.

The street value of the seized amount of Crystal Methamphetamine is believed to be around Rs. 04 million.

The suspect held in this operation is an 18-year-old resident of Urumalai. The suspect with seized narcotics and the dinghy will be handed over to the Talaimannar Police for onward legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Talaimannar Police is conducting further operations in the area in search of two other suspects in connection to this smuggling attempt.
