Navy nabs 05 persons for engaging in night diving in northern waters

The Navy apprehended 05 persons for engaging in night diving to harvest sea cucumber, during a special operation conducted off Kudairippu, Vettalakeni in Jaffna in the dark hours of 13th October 2022. Along with the suspects, 02 dinghies and about 10,000 illegally harvested sea cucumbers were also taken into naval custody.

Sri Lanka Navy conducts constant operations in coastal and sea areas around the island to prevent various forms of illegal fishing activities. In a similar effort, this apprehension was made by a team of Marine personnel of the Naval Deployment Vettilaikeni in the Northern Naval Command, on 13th October. Incidentally, the operation has led to the apprehension of 05 individuals who were engaging in night diving to harvest sea cucumber. Further, the naval personnel also seized 02 dinghies used for this illegal act and about 10,000 illegally harvested sea cucumbers.

The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Kuchchaweli, who are from 22 to 35 years of age. The persons and their belongings held in this operation were handed over to the Thalayadi Fisheries Inspector in Jaffna for onward legal action.
