Navy nabs 09 persons engaged in light-coarse fishing

The Navy apprehended 09 persons for their involvement in light-coarse fishing, during search operations conducted in the beach and sea areas of Kaddaikadu in Kilinochchi on 12th August 2024. The operations also resulted in the seizure of 05 dinghies and unauthorized fishing gear.

The Sri Lanka Navy maintains a vigilant stance, actively engaging in operations to combat illegal fishing within its sea and coastal regions. This initiative aims to endorse and support legal fishing activities.

As an extension of these efforts, the Naval Deployment Veththalakerni in the Northern Naval Command apprehended these 09 persons for their involvement in light-coarse fishing, during search operations conducted in the beach vicinity of Kaddaikadu and sea areas of Ponnaithodduvai and Kaddaikadu. During these operations, naval personnel also seized 05 dinghies and unauthorized fishing gear.

The persons held in these separate operations were identified as residents of Kilinochchi, Mullian, Vishwamadu, Mannar, Point Pedro, Tellipalai and Guru Nagar areas, who are from 23 to 50 years of age. The suspects together with dinghies and fishing equipment were handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Jaffna for onward legal action.
