Navy nabs 03 suspects for smuggling stock of cardamom and cosmetic products in Mannar
A search operation conducted by the Navy in the beach area of Thalvupadu on 23 Mar 25 led to the apprehension of 03 suspects and seizure of a dinghy, in which a smuggled stock of over 402kg of cardamom, 3781 packets of shampoo and 51 packets of cosmetic cream were found.
The Sri Lanka Navy remains ever alert and conducts patrols and search operations in the coastal areas of the island to prevent the influx of illegal items which affect socio economic stability and security of the country.
In continuation of these efforts, the operation was carried out by SLNS Gajaba in the North Central Naval Command. During the search operation, naval personnel inspected a suspicious dinghy at the Thalvupadu beach and recovered the stock of about 402kg and 200g of cardamom, 3781 packets of shampoo and 51 packets of cosmetic cream, stuffed in 14 sacks. The search also resulted in the apprehension of 03 suspects in connection to the smuggling racket.
The 03 suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Mannar, who are from 32 to 50 years of age. The suspects together with the dinghy and seized items were handed over to the Customs Office in Jaffna, for onward legal action.
