Navy nabs 16 individuals in crackdown on illegal fishing practices

In separate operations conducted by the Navy from 01 to 10 Aug 25, sixteen (16) individuals involved in various illegal fishing activities were apprehended along with 06 dinghies and a traditional boat (01) in multiple locations across the island.

In the coastal areas of Sober Island, Poduwakattu and Pigeon Island in Trincomalee, and Veththalakerni in Jaffna, the Eastern and Northern Naval Commands nabbed these 16 individuals for their involvement in fishing with unauthorized nets, explosives and engagement in illegal diving.

The suspects along with fishing boats and unauthorized gear held in these separate operations were handed over to the offices of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Trincomalee, Cod Bay and Jaffna for legal proceedings.
