Navy nabs 44 persons for involvement in illegal fishing practices

In an effort to safeguard the nation’s marine resources, the Sri Lanka Navy conducted a series of coordinated operations across island waters from 16 to 31 May 26. These operations resulted in the apprehension of 44 individuals and seizure of 08 dinghies, 02 canoes and 04 tractors utilized for illegal fishing activities.

The operations spanned the beach stretches and sea areas of Pachchankerni, Sober Island, Polmalkuda, Kinniya, Sudaikuda, Ottamawadi, Alampil, Puduwakattu in Trincomalee and Chundilulam in Jaffna, executed by the Eastern and Northern Naval Commands.

The operations yielded a significant haul of items, including sea cucumbers, commercial-grade explosives, and banned fishing gear. Following their apprehension, the suspects, along with the seized dinghies, vehicles and equipment, were handed over to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department offices in Batticaloa, Cod Bay, Muthur, Valaichchenai, Kuchchaveli, Mullaitivu, and Jaffna as well as the Pulmudai Police Station for further legal action.
