Navy grabs Sixth SLN Open Shooting Championship-2022

The 06th Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Open Shooting Championship-2022 was held at the Sri Lanka Navy Small-bore Firing Range Complex in Welisara from 14th to 22nd January 2022. The overall championship of the tournament was won by SLN Musketry Pool.

The tournament was represented by Sri Lanka Navy, Army, Air Force, Police, renowned sports clubs as well as marksmen and women from school clubs. Women Petty Officer (Communication), MGTUE Egodawela of the Navy won the Best Riffle Shooter (Women) award for her outstanding performance throughout the tournament. The Best Riffle Shooter (Men) award was clinched by Sargent WAJR Hemachandra from Sri Lanka Army. Sri Lanka Navy won the overall title of the tournament with a number victories secured from team and individual events, while Sri Lanka Army emerged runners up. Accordingly, Navy marksmen/women made following achievement in the SLN Open Shooting Championship.

The tournament was attended by 83 marksmen and women representing school sports clubs. Among them, N. Sally of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, won the award for Best Junior Shooter (Men), whereas UKD Geethma of Visaka Vidyalaya, Colombo was adjudged the Best Junior Shooter (Women). Apart from that, SBMHK Bandaranayake of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and DMNNM Dassanayake of the Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo won the awards for Best Youth Shooter (Men) and Best Youth Shooter (Women) respectively. As a noteworthy feat of the tournament, DMNNM Dassanayake qualified for the national pool to represent the country at the forthcoming 19th Asian Championship in China.

The proceedings of the event were held adhering to COVID-19 protocols and the prize awarding of the tournament was presided by Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral YN Jayarathne, as the Chief Guest, at Sri Lanka Navy Small-bore Firing Range Complex in Welisara on 23rd January 2022. Senior Officers, Director Sports, President of Navy Musketry Pool, and a group of naval personnel were present on this occasion.

Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne as the President of Navy Sports Board, has been instrumental in providing new equipment and facilities for SLN Musketry. These amenities have invariably paved the way for these achievements made by Navy marksmen and women.
