Navy extends support to bolster national campaign for dengue prevention
In a dedicated effort to turn the idea of “Towards a Dengue-Free Colombo” into a reality, the Sri Lanka Navy contributed to the ongoing national dengue prevention campaign for the third consecutive day today, 7 July 2026. This public health initiative is jointly spearheaded by the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ Secretariat, the National Dengue Control Unit, and the Environmental Protection Division of the Sri Lanka Police.
A group of over 50 naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command, partnered with Medical Officers of Health, members of the International Red Cross Organization, Divisional Secretariat offices, and Public Health Inspectors, for this worthy cause.
The collaborative teams conducted inspections across 52 locations, including the vicinity of the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Narahenpita, Wattala, Mutwal, Mattakkuliya, Borella, Pita Kotte, and Panadura. During these comprehensive sweeps, the teams successfully identified 1,231 potential dengue breeding sites and took immediate measures to neutralize them. Parallel to the cleanup efforts, seventy-three awareness programmes were successfully conducted to educate the public on effective dengue prevention practices.
In parallel with the efforts, all Naval Commands have simultaneously mobilised resources to execute numerous dengue control programmes. These events focus on conducting environmental inspections to identify and eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds. Furthermore, the Navy has implemented internal cleanliness events across naval premises, ensuring the naval bases remain dengue-free zones.
