Southern Naval Command’s revamped Slipway no. 02 springs back into action
The Southern Naval Command marked a milestone in its operational readiness as the reconstructed Slipway No. 02 at SLNS Dakshina was opened for service on 19 June 26. The ceremony was held under the auspices of the Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dammika Wijewardana.
Devastated by the catastrophic Indian Ocean Tsunami the slipway underwent an extensive overhaul to restore its vital infrastructure. The reconstruction project saw the successful upgrading of the slipway’s rail system, vessel-lifting equipment, structural components and associated operational facilities.
This engineering feat was achieved through the skilled technical expertise, craftsmanship and dedicated labour of the Navy’s Shipwright, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic and Diving branches.
With this upgrade, the Sri Lanka Navy significantly bolsters its in-house capacity for maintaining small craft. By ensuring the continuous readiness and heightened operational efficiency of the fleet, the revitalized slipway is set to play a pivotal role in strengthening maritime security needs.
The landmark event was attended by a group of naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command.
