Indigenously developed L 12V 180 Hybrid Engine Simulator declared open in Trincomalee

08 Oct 2026

The Sri Lanka Navy unveiled an indigenously designed and developed L 12V 180 Hybrid Engine Simulator at the Fast Gun Boat (FGB) Workshop of the Naval Dockyard in Trincomalee. The simulator was inaugurated on 7 October 2026 by Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy and Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage.

The simulator was developed under the guidance of Commodore Priyankara Dissanayake, Commodore Superintendent Dockyard (East). It will enable naval personnel to receive practical training in operating and monitoring the main engines of FGBs, identifying basic engine faults, starting and shutting down the engine, monitoring engine performance and identifying abnormal conditions.

Furthermore, the simulator will enable naval personnel to receive practical training ashore on the operation of an L 12V 180 hybrid engine fitted to an FGB in operational service. This will help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application while enhancing their technical knowledge, troubleshooting skills and decision-making abilities. The simulator is also expected to be used to provide technical and competency-based training to naval personnel before they are assigned to FGBs fitted with L 12V 180 engines.

Senior officers and a group of sailors from the Eastern Naval Area attended the inauguration ceremony.
