Navy takes hold of more than three tons of smuggled Kendu leaves off Chilaw

The Navy seized approx 3,135kg of smuggled Kendu leaves, along with 3 dinghies during a search operation off Karukapane Beach in Chilaw today, 24 July 2026.

The operation was carried out by SLNS Thambapanni of the Northwestern Naval Command, on receipt of credible information. During the search, naval personnel inspected the 3 suspicious dinghies off the Karukapane coastal area and recovered approx 3,135kg of Kendu leaves stuffed in 80 sacks.

It is suspected that the consignment had been smuggled into the island and that those involved abandoned the dinghies due to heightened surveillance of the Navy in the area.

The seized consignment of Kendu leaves and the 3 dinghies were handed over to the Chilaw Excise Department Office for further legal proceedings.
