Navy on alert with relief teams set for deployment amidst severe weather

The Sri Lanka Navy placed 171 disaster relief teams on standby and deployed 14 units across the Southern and Western provinces today, 21 September 2026, to assist communities affected by adverse weather conditions.

The precautionary deployment follows the formation of a low-pressure area in the Andaman Sea, northeast of Sri Lanka in the Bay of Bengal, which has brought heavy rains and potential flood risks to several parts of the country.

In response 5 relief teams from the Southern Naval Command have been positioned in vulnerable areas in the Galle district, including 2 teams in Thawalama and 1 team each in Hiniduma, Mapalagama, and Nagoda.

Further 9 teams from the Western Naval Command have been stationed across key inland locations to respond to potential emergencies. These include 3 teams in Ratnapura and 2 teams each in Nawalapitiya, Yatiyantota, and Seethawaka.
