Navy continues beach clean-up efforts in Northern Province

16 Aug 2026

The Navy has continued its efforts to keep beaches in the Northern Province clean and attractive under the Clean Sri Lanka national programme, with a two-day beach clean-up conducted at Casuarina Beach in Kareinagar and the coastal area near the Kankesanthurai Lighthouse on 14 and 15 August 2026.

The initiative was organised by the Northern Naval Command as part of the Navy’s ongoing community-based environmental activities aimed at improving coastal areas frequented by local and foreign tourists.

As a key stakeholder in the Presidential Task Force established under the Clean Sri Lanka programme to promote environmental, social and ethical restoration, the Navy continues to support initiatives aimed at empowering communities and transforming coastal areas around the island under the theme ‘A Clean Beach – An Attractive Tourist Destination’.

Conducted under the guidance and the supervision of the Commander Northern Naval Area, the clean-up programmes were organised by SLNS Elara and Uththara.

During the initiative, naval personnel collected large quantities of solid waste, including plastic and polythene discarded along the beaches, and removed the waste properly. Awareness boards were also installed to encourage the public to protect coastal environments and preserve clean beaches for future generations.
