18 Aug 2026

The Sri Lanka Navy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, has launched a series of first aid training programmes aimed at empowering the fishing community with essential life-saving knowledge.

The first training session was successfully held on 17 August 2026 at the Point Pedro Fisheries Harbour in Jaffna, under the supervision of the Commander Northern Naval Area. Medical personnel from the Command Medical Department, the Office of the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Jaffna, and the management of the Point Pedro Fisheries Harbour played a major role in this worthy effort.

Similar sessions are expected to be conducted across a number of fisheries harbour premises island-wide from 17 August to 18 November. They will be conducted under the supervision of area authorities of the Eastern, Western, Northern, Northwestern, Southern and Southeastern Naval Areas, with the support of Navy’s Directorate of Health Services.

During the event participants were provided with both theoretical and practical knowledge on Basic Life Support, possible accidents and emergencies encountered during fishing activities, and the appropriate actions to be taken following an incident.
