Navy officers recognised for cyclone Ditwah disaster relief efforts

Sri Lanka Navy officers who took part in humanitarian and disaster relief operations following Cyclone Ditwah have been recognised for their service.

The second phase of a programme to present Letters of Appreciation was held at the Western Naval Command Headquarters today, 11 August 2026 under the patronage of Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Jagath Kumara.

The officers were recognised for their contribution to managing the national disaster situation caused by the adverse weather conditions and Cyclone Ditwah, which affected Sri Lanka in November last year.

As catastrophe struck, naval personnel from all Naval Commands were deployed to rescue people trapped in hazardous conditions, evacuate those in high-risk areas to safer locations and assist in restoring damage caused by the disaster. They carried out these duties beyond their routine responsibilities as part of the Navy's national response.

The Navy also provided essential humanitarian assistance, including hygienically prepared meals and safe drinking water, to communities affected by the disaster. As part of post-flood disaster relief operations, Navy diving teams provided support to clean water sources and repair and maintain damaged water pumps at water treatment facilities.

Deputy Area Commander Western Naval Area, Commodore Aruna Wijewardana, along with senior and junior officers attended the event.
