11 Jul 2026

The Sri Lanka Navy has launched a community assistance programme to provide clean drinking water for pilgrims taking part in the annual Kataragama “Paada Yaathra” foot pilgrimage.

The initiative, managed by the Southern Naval Command, began on 10 July 2026. It aims to support devotees engaging in the foot pilgrimage from the Northern and Eastern provinces to worship at the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya.

Under the guidance of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, and the supervision of the Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dammika Wijewardana, arrangements have been made to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water.

The Navy will run this pilgrim welfare mission until 24 July to assist the thousands of traditional pilgrims undertaking the annual journey.
