VNF Annual Training Camp 2026 concludes on successful note in Welisara
The Annual Training Camp 2026 of the Sri Lanka Volunteer Naval Force concluded with a ceremonial division inspection and parade at Volunteer Naval Force (VNF) Headquarters in Welisara today, 17 September 2026.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, as the Chief Guest, at the invitation of Commandant VNF, Commodore Aruna Wijewardana and Commanding Officer VNF, Captain Anura Karunaratne.
A total of 489 volunteer naval personnel, comprising 44 officers and 445 senior and junior sailors, participated in the three-week training programme, which began on 31 August. The annual camp is a traditional feature of VNF designed to update the professional knowledge, understanding and practical skills of its personnel. The closing ceremony included a formal division inspection by the Commander of the Navy, a ceremonial parade and a cultural performance.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Admiral Fernando acknowledged the continued contribution of the VNF to broader naval operations and referenced the award of President’s Colours in 2023 as a landmark achievement in the force's history.
He called for VNF personnel to play a greater role in realizing the Navy's ‘Strategic Plan 2030,’ which aims to build a skilled maritime force to secure Sri Lanka’s maritime interests while maintaining integrity and transparency in service.
The Navy Commander also acknowledged the technical expertise and professionalism exhibited by VNF personnel across specialized fields, as well as their athletic achievements representing the Navy nationally and internationally. He paid tribute to fallen and wounded VNF personnel in action, acknowledging their service and the sacrifices of their families.
The Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ravindra Tissera, senior offices from the Navy’s Board of Management, Area Commanders, flag rank officers, senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command, a group of former VNF Commanding Officers and sailors were present on this occasion.
