Navy apprehends 28 for illegal fishing in fortnightly operations

The Navy apprehended 28 individuals for engaging in illegal fishing activities, during multiple operations conducted across the island's waters between 1 and 15 July 2026. Naval personnel also seized 12 dinghies, 4 tractors, and 1 van utilised for these unlawful activities.

The operations were carried out by the Eastern and Northern Naval Commands, covering the coastal areas of Mawadi Odi, Kadiraweli, Nayaru, and Black Point in Trincomalee, as well as Veththalakerni and Kaddaikadu in Jaffna.

The suspects, along with the banned fishing gear and seized vehicles, were handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources offices in Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Cod Bay, and Valaichchenai, as well as the Maradankerni Police, for onward legal proceedings.
